“Have taqwa of Allah, and have a truthful tongue.

Imam Sufyan At Thawree said :
“Have taqwa of Allah, and have a truthful tongue. Have sincerity and do deeds of various nature without there being any deception or treachery therein. Indeed Allah sees you although you cannot see Him, and He is with you wherever you may be, and nothing of your affairs is hidden to Him. Do not be deceitful to Allah lest He returns that to you, for indeed, whoever attempts to deceive Allah, He will deceive him (i.e. make his plot turn back to him), and remove his faith from him whilst his soul does not feel it… Perfect your inner reality and Allah shall perfect your outer reality. Rectify what is between you and Allah, and Allah shall rectify what lies between you and the people.”

A person can never have Taqwa until he controls his tongue

Abdullaah bin Umar said, "The limb that a person most needs to purify is his tongue." - (Abu Nu'aym in his Hilya)

Anas said, "A person can never have Taqwa until he controls his tongue." - (Ibn Sa'd)

''Words are Under Your Control Until You Speak Them,
But You Come Under Their Control Once You Have Spoken Them'' - [Ali Ibn Abi Thalib (R.A)]

''Many a spoken word is more piercing than an attack.'' - (Ali ibn Abu Talib RA)

'If you ever have time and find yourself in ease, then take advantage of prayer, to draw near to Allah; And if you intend to speak a vain word * Replace it with a tasbih, a word of glorification; Because taking advantage of silence is better than speaking frequently, even if you are eloquent in speech.' -'Abdullah ibn Mubarak.

إملاء الخير خير من السكوت والسكوت خير من إملاء الشر
Speaking what is good is better than silence, and silence is better than speaking evil

ibn Qayyim al-Jauziyyah:

"Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) was the most eloquent speaker of all of Allah's creation. His speech was sweet, comprehensive, and he had the most beautiful way with words. His words captured the hearts and souls. Even his enemies had to admit to this quality."

(Eng Translation of Zad-ul Ma'ad fi Hadyi Khairi-l 'Ibad 1/312)

The Imam(Ibn AlMubarak) Describing The Fearful

The Imam(Ibn AlMubarak) Describing The Fearful
A man asked theImam to describe the fearful. He said:

When the night is darkest, they endure it,
and it travels from them while they are still bowing.

Fear dispelled their sleep, so they stood alert while the people of security
in this world were sleeping peacefully.

While they are prostrating under the cloak the darkness,
their groan pierces their ribs.

They are mute in the day by the length of their silence.
They have tranquillity from their humility.

Are you pleased to weep while your tears are of water?

It was said:
Are you pleased to weep while your tears are of water? * Verily, the tears of the sinners are of blood

For sins are the disease * And weeping is the cure

Beware of your desires, and you will find pleasure * For the basis of all misguidance is the desire

['Tanbih ul-Ghafilin' (Informing the Heedless) - Imam Abul-Layth Nasr as-Samarqandi]

Ibn al-Jawzi on Ghaibah (Backbiting)

Ibn al-Jawzi on Ghaibah (Backbiting)

"How many good deeds ghaibah (backbiting) has destroyed, and how many rewards it has nullified, and how much anger of the Lord of the Worlds it has brought."

Obedience is light, disobedience is darkness

Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawiyyah:

"Obedience is light, disobedience is darkness, the bigger the darkness is, the more confused one is. At last one falls into innovations and misguidance without noticing it."

(ad-Da', p.66)

I weep before the day of weeping

Dawood, alayhi salam:

"I weep before the day of weeping. I weep before it is too late to weep."

(at-Takhwif, p.164)

"Look at every act that you would hate to die while commenting

Abu Haazim Salamah Ibn Dinar:

"Look at every act that you would hate to die while commenting, and then abandon it."

Shouldn't one of us feel shy to ask his Lord to forgive his sin,

Ibn Rajab Al Hanbali said: It was said to Hasan Al Basri :
" Shouldn't one of us feel shy to ask his Lord to forgive his sin, then do it again, then ask for forgiveness, then do it again?" He said: " The Shaytan wishes that you would have this attitude, so do not tire of asking for forgiveness"

don’t look at him as a sinner

"If one night you see someone committing a sin, tomorrow don’t look at him as a sinner, he may have repented during the night and you didn’t know." -Ali (R.A)

Forgiveness is more beloved to God than vengeance

Ibn Qayyim said, “Forgiveness is more beloved to God than vengeance; mercy is more beloved to Him than punishment; acceptance is more beloved to Him than wrath; and grace is more beloved to Him than justice.”

Despair not from your Lord's Mercy

Despair not from your Lord's Mercy,
If He had wished that you reach the Hell Fire eternally,
He would not have inspired your heart towards Him.'

more serious than the sin itself.

Abdullaah Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhu) said:
You who commit a sin, do not feel secure about the results, for what goes along with the sin is more serious than the sin itself.
Your lack of shame before the angels, who witness you when you commit the sin, is more serious than the sin itself.
Your laughter when you sin, as you forget the punishment of Allah is more serious than the sin itself.
Your delight if you get a chance to sin, is more serious than the sin itself.
Even your disappointment, if you miss a chance to sin is more serious than the sin itself.

compete with sinners in seeking Allaah’s forgiveness" -

"If you don’t have the ability to compete with the pious in righteous deeds, compete with sinners in seeking Allaah’s forgiveness" -Ibn Rajab

you have blocked its path with sins.”

Wahb bin Munabbih (rahimahullaah) also said,“He who supplicates without good deeds is like one who shoots an arrow without a bow.”

Some of the Pious Predecessors said,“How can the answer not be delayed when you have blocked its path with sins.”

A poet reiterated the same meaning saying:
“We pray to God in every distress,

And forget Him when our distress is lifted.

How can we hope that our prayer will be answered,

When we have blocked its paths with sins?”

Imaam Ibn Rajab |Jaami’ al ‘Uloom wal Hikam
