Ali Ibn Abi Talib (Radhi Allahu Anhu) said (regarding the Qur'an):

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (Radhi Allahu Anhu) said (regarding the Qur'an):

“In the Book of Allah there are stories of those who came before you, foretelling what will happen after you and rulings on issues between you. It is serious and not in jest. Whoever among the tyrants neglects it, Allah will destroy him, whoever seeks guidance in anything else, Allah will send him astray. It is a strong rope, thewise reminder, the Straight Path. It is the Book that whims and desires cannot distort and tongues cannot mispronounce. Its wonders never end, and the scholars never tire of it. Whoever quotes it speaks the truth, whoever acts upon it will be rewarded, whoever judges according to it will be just, and whoever calls people to it, will be guided to a Straight Path.”

Hasan Al Basri would reproach his soul

O you who believe, why do you saythat which you do not do?
This verse elicits unease from the believers, specifically those onthe forefronts of daʿwah [i.e. Muslim bloggers, lecturers, `imāms, deen-zealots].Our voices project religiosity, though often we are mired in our own spiritualdiseases: Insincerity. Tainted intentions. Laziness in worship. Arrogance.Temptation. So when he recited this verse, `Imām al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī wouldreproach his soul…

‘Iyyāka Naʻbud averts riyāʼ (showing off)

Ibn al-Qayyim states, “I would often hear Shaykh al-Islām ibn Taymīyyah (may Allāh sanctify his soul) say, ‘Iyyāka Naʻbud averts riyāʼ (showing off, ostentation) and Iyyāka Nastaʻīn averts arrogance.’”

Luqman's advice to his son

Luqman's advice to his son

The Qur’ân contains ten precious advices Luqmân offered his son. Following is the list of this advice offered to Muslim parents, that they may communicate them to their children, family and members of society that they may implement them. If this valuable advise is followed and implemented then we will all be on the straight Path leading to Paradise. Luqmân himself summed up in a few words the way to succeed in this life and on the Day of Judgement.

1. Luqmân warns his son against the greatest injustice man can do. Allâh said that Luqmân said:

"O my son! Join not in worship others with Allâh. Verily, joining others in worship with Allâh is a great injustice indeed." [31:13]
Luqmân calls his son: "My Son". To do so catches his son's attention so that he may listen carefully to his father . Then he calls his son's attention to Tawhid. " Shirk," Luqmân said:" Is a great injustice indeed ".

Therefore, the one who associates others with Allâh in worship does injustice to Allâh, the owner and Creator of the universe. A great injustice is also done to the Mushrik by his own sellf as he subjects himself to Allâh's anger and eternal punishment in Hell.

2. Luqmân reminds his son of the rights of his parents on him,

"and We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and good to his parents. His mother bore him upon weakness and hardship" [31:14]
He describes hardships mothers face bearing children.

"And his weaning is in two years, give thanks to Me and to your parents. Unto Me is the final destination." [ 31:14]
Luqmân mentions the total dependence of infants on their mothers for two years. Thank Allâh, and then your parents . In not, then the final destination is to Allâh.

"And if they both strive with you to make you join in worship with me others that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not, but behave with them in the world kindly." [31:15]
Luqmân tells his son that if the parents are Mushrikîn, then do not follow their way: Allâh's right comes first by far. Even so. for as long as the live, treat your Mushrik parents with kindness.

3. Luqmân then describes some of Allâh's Might.

"O my son! If it be equal to the weight of a grain of mustard seed, and tough it be as a rock, or in the Heavens or the earth, Allâh will bring it forth. Verily Allâh is subtle in bringing out that grain, well aware of its place." [31:16]
Allâh's Knowledge is so perfect that the existence of anything, big or small, is acknowledged and controlled by Him. Luqmân tries to impress his son reminding him of Allâh's absolute control over His kingdom. Such might and power must not be challenged or ignored by anyone.

4. A great advice to Luqman's son is to establish regular prayer, on time and with the best possible performance,

"O my son! Offer prayer perfectly." [31:17]
Prayer is the direct connection between a Muslim and his Creator. Parents must take great care to teach and call upon their children to establish prayer.

5. Luqmân advises his son to "enjoin (people) for good, and forbid from evil." [31:17]

If every Muslim observe this duty , then evil and mischief will have no place in Muslim society.

6. After the useful advice he offered his son, Luqmân recommended patience in implementing them, and in all matters of life,

"And bear with patience whatever befalls you. Verily, these are some of the important commandments ordered by Allâh with no exemption." [31:17]

Patience is a righteous act ordered, and rewarded by Allâh.

7. Arrogance is an attribute of Allâh alone and not for man.

The Creator and Owner of the universe is the only One who deserves to be Arrogant. Allâh threatens arrogant people with punishment in Hellfire. Luqmân said:

"And turn not your face away from men with pride." [31:18]

8. To be moderate is a great attitude anyone can possess,

"Nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily Allâh likes not each arrogant boaster." [31:18]

Allâh does not like that man is arrogant and proud of themselves.

9. To be moderate in walking and talking is also one of Luqman's advises to his son, "And be moderate (or show no insolence) in walking." [31:19]

Islâm offers a code of conduct in every aspect of life. Even the way Muslims walk and talk are regulated. Islam offers guidelines in this regard that will produce the best behavior and generate respect.

10. Luqmân reminds his son that being harsh while talking will liken his voice to the braying of a donkey. Shouting does not win hearts, rather , it will offend and alienate people,

"And lower your voice. Verily the harshest of all voices is the voice (braying] of an ass!!" [31:19]

A man has preserved the Qur'an

It was said to Al-Hassan Al-Basri:

“A man has preserved the Qur'an (to memory)”. He responded by saying: “Rather, it is the Qur'an that has preserved him (from every evil)."

Take good care of the Qur’aan

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

Take good care of the Qur’aan for it escapes the chests of men quicker than a camel from its tying rope.
[Mutafaqqun ‘Alayh (Agreed upon; Both al-Bukhaaree and Muslim) from Abu Hurairah]

If you are afflicted by a calamity and you are a patient

Some of the salaf said :
“If you are afflicted by a calamity and you are a patient, then your calamity is one. But if you are not patient, then your calamity is doubled – losing the reward and losing the beloved one, the Hereafter (Paradis
e).”

This saying of some of the Salaf is in relation to what Allaah سبحانه وتعالى mentions in Surah al-Hajj, verse 11:

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَعْبُدُ اللَّهَ عَلَى حَرْفٍ فَإِنْ أَصَابَهُ خَيْرٌ اطْمَأَنَّ بِهِ وَإِنْ أَصَابَتْهُ فِتْنَةٌ انقَلَبَ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ خَسِرَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةَ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْخُسْرَانُ الْمُبِينُ

{And among mankind is he who worships Allaah as it were upon the edge (i.e. in doubt): if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him he turns back on his face (i.e. reverts to disbelief after embracing Islaam). He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the evident loss.} [Al-Hajj 22:11]

“Beautiful Patience”

“Beautiful Patience”
Allah SWT tells us in surat al ma3rij:
فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا
Therefore [O Believer] endure all adversity with beautiful patience. And this is a fi3l amr.. a command for us from Allah, so we must learn its meaning and try to practise it.The phrase sabrun jameel is most famous from the saying of Sayidna Yaqoob alayhi salam upon hearing the news of his son Yusuf, as told in Surah Yusuf:
فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ وَاللّهُ الْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَى مَا تَصِفُونَ
But [as for myself,] patience in adversity is most goodly [in the sight of God]; and it is to God [alone] that I pray to give me strength to bear the misfortune which you have described to me.”
Here some explanations are given as to the meaning of “sabrun jameel” and what makes it different than just any normal bit of sabr or low level of sabr:Mujahid said: “Beautiful Patience is patience without any panic.”Amr bin Qays said “Beautiful Patience means to be content with adversity and to surrender to the will of Allah.”Yunus bin Yazid said: “I asked Rabiah bin Abdurrahman: ‘What is the ultimate of patience?’ He said “to be outwardly the same at the time of affliction as one was the day before it struck.” [this does not mean that a person does not or should not feel pain or anguish: patience in this instance means that one refrains from panicking and complaining.]Commenting on the meaning of beautiful patience, Qiyas bin al Hajjaj said “the person who is suffering from some afflictions should behave in such a way that nobody is able to distinguish him from others.”
- From Ibn Qayyim’s “Patience and Gratitude”

Our Lord, Pour out patience onto us!

If you want to benefit from the Qur’aan

“If you want to benefit from the Qur’aan, gather your heart when it is recited (try to understand it), focus your hearing, and act like you are being directly addressed by Allah.”
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimullah)

When I desire to talk to Allaah

"When I desire to talk to Allaah, I make Du'aa and
when I desire for Allaah to talk to me, I read the Qur'an."

Seek out your heart

Ibn Qayyim (ra) said:
“When the slave wakes up as the night encloses him and his only concern is Allah and how to please and obey Him, then Allah takes it upon Him to fulfil all his needs and remove from him all that causes him anxiety. Allah also makes his heart free to love Him only, his tongue free to remember Him only, and his body free to serve Him only.
However, when a slave of Allah wakes up and the night encloses him and his main concern is the world, Allah will make him bear the burdens of its anxiety, grief and hardship. Allah will entrust him to his own self and He will make his heart busy, sealing it from His love since it will be preoccupied in the love of creation. Allah will keep his tongue from His remembrance because it will be engaged with His creation: his body will be kept from obedience since it will be enslaved by its desires and services. And he will toil like a beast of burden toils in the service of another. And all who turn away from the worship, obedience and love of Allah will be put into trial with the worship, service and love for creation.
Allah SWT says:
“And whosoever turns away (blinds himself) from the remembrance of the Most Gracious (Allah) (i.e this Quran and worship of Allah), We appoint for him Shaytaan to be a Qarin (an intimate companion) to him” (43:36)
Ibn Qayyim continues to say, ”Seek out your heart in three situations first, when you are listening to the Quraan, when you are part of a gathering of remembrance and third, when you are alone and away from the world and its distractions. If you cannot find your heart in these situations, then ask Allah to bestow upon you a heart, for indeed you are bereft of one.”

Imam Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya (May Allah send His Mercy upon him) said:
“If the slave of Allah awakes to nothing but the concern about their relationship with Allah, then Allah will take on the responsibility of all their affairs and concerns. Allah will also unburden their heart for His love, their tongue for His remembrance and their limbs for His servitude. And if the slave of Allah were to awake and retire at night with the dunya being their only concern, then Allah will burden them with its worries and distress. Allah will then dispose of the servant’s affairs to theirself. In that way the servant’s heart will become preoccupied in the love of the creation rather than loving the Creator, the servant’s tongue will busy itself in the mention of others rather than in the remembrance of Allah and the limbs will be in the [futile] service of others. The servant, being in this state, resembles a mule that works tirelessly [in the service of its master] or similar to the bellows that blows its insides out and bends its ‘ribs’ in the service of others [not itself].”
The Imam concludes by saying, “Whoever objects to the servitude of Allah and His obedience will be afflicted with the slavery, devotion and service of the created”.

I advise you to adhere to the Quraan

Shu’bah and Qatadah related from Yunus bin Jubair, who said that he and his companions visited Jundub and said to him, “Give us some advice”. He replied:
“I advise you to fear Allah. I advise you to adhere to the Quraan – for it is light in the darkest of nights and it is guidance during the day. Apply it…and if a trial, such as poverty comes to you, give precedence to your religion over wealth. If that trial worsens, continue to put your religion before your wealth and your soul, for indeed the one who is destroyed is the one whose religion is destroyed; the one who is poor is the one who has lost his religion. Know that there is no poverty after Paradise and there is no richness after the Hellfire

The Qurân was sent down to be acted upon

It is reported from Al-Fudayl (b. ‘Ayyâd) that he said:
The Qurân was sent down to be acted upon but people have taken just reciting it as enough of a deed. He was asked, “How is it acted upon?” He replied, “They should treat as halâl what it makes halâl and treat as harâm what it makes harâm, they should take on its commandments and stay away from what it forbids, and they should stop to ponder its amazing knowledge and wisdom.”

How many people carry the Qur’an in the hearts but the Qur’an curses them

Ibn al-Mubarak said:

‘How many people carry the Qur’an in the hearts but the Qur’an curses them from inside their hearts! If the bearer of Qur’an disobeys his Lord, the Qur’an calls him from inside his chest saying, ‘By Allah, you have not carried me (i.e. memorised me) for this! Will you not be shy from your Lord?’

Even Hajjaj knew!

Even Hajjaj knew!

Hajjaj ibn Yusuf was once approached by a woman who cried, 'O Ameer! Forgive and release my son for he is innocent. I ask you by the One who ommited كلّا from the top half!'

Hajjaj ibn Yusuf despite all his tyranny was well-versed in the words & structure of the Qur'aan and realised the depth and extent to which this woman went in her plea. As a result he ordered the release of her son.

Explanation: The term
كلّا (kallaa) is not present in the Qur'aan anywhere in the first 15 juz - the first place it's used is in Soorah Maryam (كَلَّا سَنَكْتُبُ مَا يَقُولُ وَنَمُدُّ لَهُ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ مَدّاً ) in Juz 16 and thereafter is repeated all the way through to the end.

This incident begs the question, how well versed and in touch are we with the Qur'aan?

Info taken from Shaykh Salih al-Maghamisi's Quranic lectures.
