If We Lose Touch with the Quraan, We Lose Our Way

The role of the Quraan in confirming the truth of what went before and in spelling out and clarifying everything cannot be ignored. If earlier religious communities went astray, it was because they lost touch with revelation. The same is true with regard to Muslims; if we lose touch with the Quraan, we lose our way. It becomes extremely important, therefore, that we pay careful attention to what is attributed to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). In fact, the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) cautioned Muslims on this point.
'Abdullaah bin 'Umar (radhiyallaahu 'anhumaa) reported that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "Many ahaadeeth will be circulated from me. Whenever my ahaadeeth (hadeeth pl.) come to you, read the Book of Allaah and consider its meaning. If something agrees with the Quraan, I said it. If something contradicts the Book of Allaah, I did not say it."

The Sunnah, therefore, needs to be understood as a source of clarification for the Book of Allaah and an aid to its understanding and interpretation. It doesn't, however, overrule the Quraan, overstep its bounds, abrogate its texts, contradict it, or violate its principles.
